Rather than buying an imitation whip cream such as Cool Whip to use as a dessert topping, you can make your own and get you a similar taste at a lesser price. This simple recipe, can be completed in a few minutes.
What you need:
• 1 tsp unflavored gelatin
• 2 tsp cold water
• 3 tbsp boiling water
• 1/2 cup ice water
• 1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
• 3-4 tbsp sugar
• 3 tbsp vegetable oil
• optional: 2 tsp vanilla extract (for whiteness and taste)
Step 1: Chill a small mixing bowl and whisk. Having these items cold will give your topping the best consistency.
Step 2: Put gelatin in a separate container, and then soften it by stirring in 2 tablespoons of cold water. Next stir in boiling water until the gelatin is completely and fully dissolved.
Step 3: Its best to allow gelatin to cool for 2-3 minutes, until it is room temperature.
Step 4: Now put both the ice water and dry milk in the chilled mixing bowl.
Step 5: Beat it at high speed, until the mixture forms stiff peaks. Consider using a mixer to quicken the process, but note that this could affect the consistency.
Step 6: Add the sugar and pure vanilla extract; continue to beat. Then add vegetable oil and gelatin. Note that the vanilla extract is optional. It may take away from the white color of the topping, and a little bit of the taste.
Step 7: Now put it in the freezer for 15 minutes, then transfer to the refrigerator until use.
Step 8: You may need to stir it a little before using just to ensure a creamy texture.
Note:
• Substitutions such as splenda instead of sugar have worked very well.
• When learning how to make imitation Cool Whip at home, follow the recipe exactly the first time or be creative by trying different flavors of gelatin.
• But the doubling of the recipe will affect the texture and is not recommended.
As always, be healthy, and stay safe !
