Recipe’s from Birdy’s Kitchen, Number 1:

So recently at a yard sale, I purchased 3 very old cook books, tattered, with loads of notes written and faded on the pages; I really enjoy old books, regardless of the subject matter.  I paid roughly $35.00 for all three books held together with some string. And brought them home.  At the time that I purchased them, I was just told that they were very old, had been in the family for years, and years …  And her Mother who passed away earlier that year used them quite a bit back in the late 1930’s for cooking, so I assumed that they were cook-books, still unsure what they were, but was intrigued.

To me an old book, is an evening of wonder, better than the television, radio, and most definitely better than any other thing anywhere else, sit in an easy chair or lounge on the sofa, and read. What I found, was that I had purchased three cookbooks, very nice gems.  Yes, they may be tattered, ripped, torn, stained and written on long ago, with the writings faded with time, but absolute Gems

And this is what I bought:
1). The Experienced English Housekeeper, by, Elizabeth Raffald, 1st edition, 1869, all there but the book is falling apart;
2). English cooking, by “A Lady” (but written in faded pencil was Han. Glasse, 1st edition, published in 1747, and again this one is no longer bound, just a collection of loose pages, and wait for it ….  I am missing page 62, but …
3). The Modern Cook,  by Charles Elmé Francatelli, 1st edition, 1846, Publishers Richard Bentley & Son, London, all 306 pages with the addition my missing page 62 of ‘English cooking’ stuffed between paged 105 and 106 respectively.

So, now I bet your asking yourself why am I explaining this to you - the reader?  It’s simple really, you see I’m not really a great cook on my own.  In fact, most people refuse to even try to taste my cooking, particularly when I use ingredients that they find to be ‘obnoxiously invented and inserted by me into my cooking to run afoul with their senses, and deprive them of a few moments of sanity through the general disruption of their sense of taste, and my ability to overwhelm that sense to the point of not being able to taste anything for a week or three after tasting a dish made by Birdy,” and then caution other people not to try or taste my cooking…

I’ve spent a good many years in prison and believe me: prison food is the last thing on earth that people want to try to live on. So, raw, burnt. ½ cooked, whatever, its food and tastes good and came from my stove. I will still eat it.

However, there are some of my ‘cooking experiments’ that went awry, now a prime example of this, is the bare spot of ground near my residence, where nothing grows anymore, I have used the same spot to throw out some of my creations, where they were not fit for human consumption, even most of the wild animals won’t eat it, and the few that have – died, a few feet away from their last meal …  The grass, bushes and lone pine tree that was there when I started dumping some of my cooking experiments have long since died … so now it’s just a bare spot, even the birds don’t venture to inspect what I put there ….

But, I am good at following instructions from cook books I could not find a coal fired stove, let alone the coal necessary to use such a contraption, and some of the ingredients mentioned, I had to research on-line to find the equivalent of, as geese oil is no longer available and neither is musk of wild cat (the musk is, but the recipe calls for 5 ounces, and the modern day cost of such a product is [the cheapest] $82.50/gram …) which is far too expensive to me.

So, I tried some of these recipes, and had to make some changes to make them work out correctly. And I will reproduce two of them here, that even my fiercest foe enjoyed tasting, and wanted more.

Here goes:

Pale-Ale Cookies:
6 Large Tablespoons of Fresh Butter (Or Lard)
6 Heaping Tablespoons of Freshly Ground Sugar (Powdered Sugar)
3 Beaten Eggs Yolks
2 Teaspoons pure vanilla (or ½ Teaspoon Vanilla Extract)
1/8 Teaspoon of coarse salt
1 ½ cups of sifted flour

Thoroughly cream the butter and the sugar; add egg yolks and vanilla, beat very well. Now, while still mixing. Add the flour and salt. Let cool in ice-box (refrigerator) for 20 minutes.
Then, with greased spoon, scoop and drop dough from 12” onto a cookie sheet and bake for about 15 to 17 minutes in oven set to temperature at around 365 This will make around 2 to 3 dozen cookies. Now while they are still warm from the oven you can add whatever topping you want, me I added a tiny lump of creamy peanut butter which promptly melted – and expanded to cover almost the entire top with a sheen of peanut butter.  I had to make 3 batches as everyone want more, and more and more…

Whole White Nut Raisin Loaf Bread
1 ¾ Cups of sugar
4 Tablespoons of butter
4 Large Eggs [the recipe calls for Geese Eggs]
2 ½ Cups of Whole Milk
1 ½ Cups of Honey
4 ½ Cups of sifted flour
4 Teaspoons of rising [baking] powder
1 ¾ Teaspoons of fine [table or sea] salt
1 ½ Cups of chopped nuts [your choice here, I used pecans]
1 ½ Cup of Raisins

Mix thoroughly sugar, honey, butter, eggs and milk.
Sift all dry ingredients. Mix these together, now slowly add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients while stirring, making sure that all are mixed together without any lumps.  Now add the nuts and raisins, until they are blended into the mixture.  Pour this batter into a greased bread pan and cook in oven set to temperature at around 365 degrees for 1 hour and 20 or so minutes, this will make about 2 ½ loaves of bread, wait until nicely cooled until you try to cut it with bread knife.  Magnificent!

So, ends another post, as I will continue to strive for a better cooking experience, I will be posting them here as well, thus I bid you this:

As always, stay safe and be happy !

Ahh Pain and Why Does My Head Ache? (16,400)

You Ate a Headache "Trigger"
Everyone is different, but foods that are more likely to cause a throbbing head include:

·        Aged cheese
·        Some fruits and nuts
·        Alcohol
·        Foods with nitrates, like hot dogs, sausage, or bacon
·        Fermented or pickled foods like sauerkraut or relish
·        A flavor enhancer called MSG

You can figure out your triggers if you track what and when you eat in a food journal and notice what leads to a headache

You Drank Too Much Alcohol Last Night
Today you pay with a hangover that includes a throbbing head. That's because alcohol disturbs your sleep and rids your body of liquid. You may feel tired and nauseous, too. About five to eight drinks for men and three to five for women is enough to cause it. Re-hydrate with water, broth, or sports drinks. Anti-inflammatory drugs can help, but avoid acetaminophen, which is too hard on your liver when you've been drinking.

You Had Sex
You may have a dull ache in your neck or head that worsens as you get more sexually excited. Or it might be a throbbing headache that arrives quickly just as you climax. Some people feel both. Most last minutes, but it can be hours. It's usually nothing to worry about but tell your doctor right away if you get a headache during or after sex, especially if it never happened before or it's sudden, which could be signs of something serious.

You Have an Ear Infection
Bacteria or a virus may infect the air-filled middle ear, where tiny bones vibrate to make the sounds you hear. It usually happens fast. Fluid buildup could cause ear and head pain along with drainage of liquid, blood, or pus. If you notice any of these symptoms, call your doctor, who will want to watch the infection and can help you manage pain and swelling. Most cases get better without treatment in 1-2 weeks.

You Hit Your Head
Headaches can start right away or months after an injury. They might be at the site of the blow or all over your skull and may get worse when you're stressed. The cause isn't always clear, but sometimes too much blood builds up in one spot. This is called a hematoma. In serious cases, you may feel weak, confused, nauseous, and forgetful. See your doctor if you have any of these symptoms or if you have a headache after hitting your head.

You're Hungry
Maybe you haven't had a meal in a while. It could give you low blood sugar, which triggers a headache. It might help to have several small meals instead of three big ones and keep healthy snacks like nuts or veggies on hand for emergencies

You Just Ate Ice Cream
Sometimes called an "ice cream headache" or "brain freeze," it happens when you eat something very cold, especially if you do it fast. Doctors aren't sure what causes it, but it could be that the icy temperature makes the blood vessels in your mouth shrink, which triggers pain signals to your brain. It's nothing to worry about and is usually gone in a minute or so. Prevention is simple: Eat frosty foods more slowly.

You Just Worked Out
You might hurt on both sides of your head while you exercise hard or after you're done. Running, swimming, or weightlifting can bring it on. It's usually nothing to worry about, but it's best to check with your doctor to be sure it's not something serious. Get medical help right away if you also throw up, pass out, or have double vision

Your Sinuses Are Swollen
A simple cold can inflame hollow areas behind your cheekbones and forehead. The swelling could cause pain there that worsens when you bend over. It might be hard to breathe because mucus, which can get thick and yellow or green, doesn't drain properly. Over-the-counter drugs can often help you manage it. There's no need to call your doctor unless the symptoms are bad, don't go away, or get worse.

You Skipped Your Morning Coffee
Your body gets used to the caffeine and reminds you with a throbbing head if you forget to drink your regular cup. When coffee isn't at hand, green or black tea or even dark chocolate will do. If you want to quit your caffeine habit, don't do it all at once. Cut down by about 25% a week to get used to it.

You Tense Your Neck and Shoulders
Do you hunch over your computer for hours or hold your phone to your ear with your shoulder? Or maybe stress makes you tense the muscles in your jaw. Any of these may cause "tension headaches." A hot shower, warming pad, and over-the-counter meddication can help. Regular exercise along with meditation and other relaxation approaches might stop it before it starts

You Overdo Your Pain Relievers
Even common over-the-counter medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen may cause headaches if you use them more than 15 days a month. Prescription opioids or drugs with caffeine might do it in just 10 days. People who get migraines are more likely to have this problem. Your doctor can help you change your medication and give you other strategies to make you feel better.

You've Got the Wrong Pillow
It may give you a headache if it puts your body in the wrong posture all night. And if you toss and turn, the lack of sleep might also lead to a pounding head. Look for a pillow that keeps your head and neck in line with the rest of your body, as if you are standing up. Talk to your doctor or a physical therapist if you can't get comfortable.

Your Vision is Blurry
You may get a headache when you try to focus on something near your face. If you're farsighted, things look fuzzy as you get closer to them. It could be because your eyeball is too short or the clear covering on your eye, called the cornea, is too flat. You might be born with it, but it starts to happen to most folks after age 40. Your doctor can help with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery that corrects the shape of your cornea.

When to Call 911 Emergency:
In rare cases, a headache might be a sign of something more serious. It could be a condition that develops slowly, such as a brain tumor. Or it could be a medical emergency, like a stroke. Call 911 if the pain is sudden and severe or you notice any of these symptoms along with it:

·        Numbness or weakness on one side of your face or body
·        Garbled speech or confusion
·        Trouble seeing
·        Dizziness, loss of balance

As always, stay safe, and stay healthy !

The Candy Story ...

(Author of this little piece is unknown …)
[Caution not your normal candy story …]
It was another payday and I was tired of Mr. Goodbar.
I saw Miss Hershey standing behind the powerhouse on the corner of Clark and Fifth Avenue when I whipped out my whopper and whispered, "Hey sweetheart, how'd you like to crunch on my big hunk for a 100 grand?"
Well, she immediately went down on my tootsie roll, and it was like pure almond joy! I couldn't help but grab her delicious mounds because it was easy to see that this little twix had the red hots.
It was all I could do to hold the snickers and krackle as my butterfinger went up her tight little kit kat and she started to scream "Oh henry, oh henry!"
Soon she was fondling my peter pan and zagnut and I knew it wouldn't be long before I blew my milk duds clear to mars that gave her a taste of the old milky way.
She asked me if I was into M&M, but I said, "Hey chicklet, no kinky stuff. I said, "Look you little reese's pieces, don't be a zero, be a lifesaver. Why don't you take my watchamacallit and slip it up your bit ~o~ honey?"
(What a piece of juicy fruit she was too!) She screamed, "Oh crackerjack, better than the three musketeers!"
As I rammed my ding dong up her rocky road and into her peanut butter cup. Well, I was giving it to her good ~n~ plenty, when all of a sudden...my starburst!
Yeah, as luck would have it, she started to grow chunky and complained of a wrigley in her stomach.
Sure enough, 9 months later, out popped... a baby ruth!

Ahh, enjoy life !

I Do Like Making My Own Cream Cheese:

Learning how to make cream cheese is one of those things that makes you feel like a regular homesteading super- star… But I have to warn you before you proceed, otherwise it just wouldn’t be fair: Homemade cream cheese is one of those things that beckons you to eat it in large spoonfuls. You’ve now been warned.  Yeah, yeah… Smearing it on homemade bagels is nice too, but there’s just something about eating it plain…

Since I have an abundance of cream (for the first time in a long, long time), I decided it was time to try playing around with making my own cream cheese. And, let me just say that it couldn’t be easier!

First, some clarifications is necessary here before I begin …

1: there seems to be about a million different methods if you want to learn how to make cream cheese… This is the method I prefer, and it’s pretty darn simple.

2: Many, MANY “cream cheese” recipes are actually yogurt cheese or fromage blanc recipes. I’ve made a lot of yogurt cheese as well, and it’s great– but not the same as real cream cheese. The flavor and texture are very much different.

3: I used my fresh, raw cream for this recipe. However, since you are adding a culture to it, you could use store-bought, pasteurized cream if you had to. Or even half & half would work. Just try to use the highest quality cream that you can find.

How to Make Cream Cheese
2 cups cream*
2 cups whole milk*
1 package cream cheese starter culture OR 1/8 teaspoon of Mesophilic starter culture
Fine cheesecloth
Sea salt to taste

*Try to select raw dairy or regular pasteurized dairy. AND avoid ultra-heat treated (UHT) milk or cream, as it will yield inconsistent results.

Now then:

·   Make sure you are using a glass container to hold your cream/milk. Gently stir in the starter culture.

·   Loosely cover (not airtight!) and set it on your counter top to culture for 8 to 12 hours. (It may take more or less time, depending on the temperature of your kitchen.)

·   You’ll know its done when it has set up and somewhat resembles yogurt. (It might not be a perfectly even consistency, but that’s ok.)

·   Dump the thickened cream into the cheesecloth and allow the whey to drip out for at least 12 hours (the longer it drips, the firmer your finished cheese will be).

·    (Instead of draining the cream at this stage, you could also turn it into cultured butter. Decisions… decisions…)

·   You might have to get a little creative with your drip set-up. I don’t have any knobs on my cabinet doors, so I tie the ends of my improvised cheesecloth around a wooden spoon and allow it to drip into a pitcher.

·   My not-so-fancy dripping set-up once it has reached the desired consistency, scrape it out of the cheesecloth and lightly salt it to taste. The salt is optional, but it will help it keep slightly longer. Store in an airtight container in your fridge– it will get firmer as it chills.

·         I usually get 1 1/2 to 2 cups of cream cheese out of 1 quart of cream/milk. Yields will vary slightly.

Kitchen Notes:
I’ve seen several recipes that use cultured buttermilk instead of the mesophilic culture to make cream cheese. I haven’t personally tried it, but it would probably work just as well. Add 1/8 to 1/4 cup of buttermilk to your quart of cream to try this method.

You can use all cream in this recipe for a richer result, or all milk for a less-rich cream cheese. The choice is yours.

You can spice up your cream cheese with all sorts of different flavors! Mix in cinnamon, fruit preserves, or even some chives and onion powder for a unique treat.

To make yogurt cheese: Follow this exact same method, substituting the quart of cultured cream with a quart of yogurt instead.

Here are a bunch of ways to use the leftover whey. Getting fresh whey is one of the perks of learning how to make cream cheese– don’t waste it!

If you ahh, accidentally forget about your cream cheese and leave it culturing or dripping for longer than stated above, don’t sweat it. It won’t hurt it and the worse that will happen is that it will just be slightly tangier.

Let me just say that homemade cream cheese is infinitely better than the store bought stuff. You’ll want to scoop it out of the container and eat it plain… Or smear it on some bread… Or homemade bagels… Or make a cheesecake… Or….

How to Make Cream Cheese
Serves: 1½ to 2 cups of cream cheese

Ingredients
2 cups cream
2 cups milk
1 package cream cheese starter culture OR (1/8 teaspoon) Mesophilic starter culture
Fine cheesecloth or a tea towel
Sea salt to taste (optional)

Instructions
Use a glass container to hold your cream/milk and gently stir in the starter culture

Loosely cover (not airtight!)

Leave on counter top 8 to 12 hours to culture, time varies depending on temperature

It's ready when it somewhat resembles yogurt

Dump thickened cream into cheesecloth and allow whey to drip out at least 12 hours (the longer it drips, the firmer your cheese will be)

Scrape out of cheesecloth and lightly salt to taste (salt is optional, but it lasts longer)

Store in an airtight container in fridge

Note:  It gets firmer as it starts to cool down and chills

As always, stay safe, and be happy!

Make Your Own Soap without Lye

Supplies Needed
– Natural Soap Base
– Molds
– Herbs, flowers, or fruit (like lavender flowers), rose petals; blueberries, blackberries, orange peels, lemon peels, even apple skins (fresh)
– Essential Oils
– Parchment Paper (depending on what mold you use)
– Molds (I love molds, circular molds, or simple bar molds, literally anything can be used for a mold, using the imagination that’s what makes homemade soap so special especially when making it for a gift to that special someone)
– Something to grate (a cheese grater, salad shooter, or food processor are good choices)
– Liquid

1. Natural soap
Look for soap that is free of chemicals and fragrances. The simpler the better when it comes to hand milling. White or cream colored work best.

You can use many kinds of soap. Here are some good choices:
  • Cocoa Butter Soap Base
  • Glycerin Soap Base
  • Goat's Milk Soap Base
  • Shea Butter Soap Base

2. Molds
A simple bread loaf pan will work depending on how much soap you're melting. Line the mold with parchment paper for easy removal. Silicone molds work well too. These come in fun shapes and sizes like this flower mold. You will need parchment paper if you choose to use the common bread mold pan as the mold of your choice.

3.  Herbs/Plants
Do you love lavender? Dried lavender or even fresh lavender makes a perfect addition. Roses? Dried rose petals or even fresh rose petals work beautifully. Plant powders will double as natural colorants.

If you plan on using fruit, make sure that the fruit is fresh for the best results. Blackberry and Blueberry makes a lovely light blue and even purple color, oranges with added sea salt and a spot of turmeric will make a very deep orange color, add cinnamon to lemons for a great looking swirled light/dark lemon color, add a pinch of sugar and a drop or 2 of vanilla extract to set the lemon smell (I use ¼ Tsp. and 4 drops of vanilla extract per bar).

Turmeric, for example, turns the soap a light orange while adding skin nourishing qualities. Spirulina powder makes a deep green. Ground oatmeal offers a nice exfoliating quality. Himalayan pink salt adds a nice pink hue.

4. Essential oils
Forgo the petroleum based fragrances and add scent using 100% natural essential oils. Essential oils carry through the hand milling process quite well – so pick a scent you enjoy and have fun!

Herb/essential oil combinations that work well include:
- Lemon Oil with Cinnamon powder
- Pine Oil with Turmeric powder
- Peppermint Oil with activated charcoal for a deep cleansing experience.
- Plumeria Oil with dried lavender
- Thyme Oil with turmeric powder

5. Liquid
You'll need to add a slight amount of liquid to keep the soap from burning during the melting process.  While normal water works fine, possible liquids include beer, coconut milk, coffee, green tea, kombucha, infused herbs, floral hydrosol, fruit juice and even wine.

Instructions
1.  Grate 8 ounces of soap. (Two regular size bars.) A cheese grater works well, as does a salad shooter. A food processor also works.
2.  Sprinkle 1-2 ounces water or other liquid over the grated soap.
3.  Heat on low setting in a double boiler or crock pot. You can also place in oven-safe pot and heat in the oven at the lowest setting.
Make sure to stir frequently to avoid burning. This can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. When soap is liquefied, remove from heat. It will be somewhat lumpy and translucent. In order to make is ready to receive the next part, vigorously stir this liquid until it is creams and without lumps.
4.  Add desired ingredients. Experimentation is necessary to get the results that you like, as no one recipe can even come close to pleasing all the people all the time.
5.  Now, gentle stir to desired consistency. Pour (or spoon) soap mixture into molds.  I placed some dried rose petals on the bottom of the flower molds.
6.  Cool the soap and remove from mold (place mold into freezer for up to 1 hour to make this easier). Cut into desired sizes and shapes using a soap cutter or a food scraper/shovel.
7.  Allow soap to dry for several days or more. The more liquid you use the longer it will take to cure.
8.  Once you begin using your soap, be sure to dry it thoroughly between uses to extend its life.

And That's it!  These would make a fabulous gift for almost any occasion.

As always, stay safe and enjoy life to its fullest!

The most vicious and youngest killers and serial killers in history:

A number of child killings have been recorded throughout the years. These often have involved disturbing acts one can hardly imagine a child suffering through. These cases are becoming more controversial as the number of child killings increases every year.

However, what happens if that innocent and vulnerable-looking child is the one responsible for the abduction and murders in your neighborhood? Would you believe the accusations made of someone so young?

Could a child really commit such crimes? These are not your typical childish crimes of stealing toys from a friend, or bullying a schoolmate. This is the list for the top young killers. There is a small amount of overlap from the list of evil children, for the sake of including people that really do deserve to be on this list.

Artyom Alexandrovich, 18 Anoufriev and Nikita Vakhtangovich Lytkin, 17
In the Russian neighborhood of Akademgorodok in Irkutsk, two teens killed six locals and attacked nine others. At the time of the first murder in 2010, Artyom Alexandrovich Anoufriev was 18 and Nikita Vakhtangovich Lytkin was 17. Their first victim was 12-year-old Danil Semyonov. Just 15 days later, the teens killed 69-year-old Olga Pirog. The four other victims included Alexander Maximov, Roman Faizullin, a homeless man, and a homeless woman. The two teens went as far as to record one of the attacks, which was later found on an SD card belonging to Nikita’s uncle. The teens carried out the murders by viciously attacking their victims from behind using a mallet and knife.

Harvey Miguel Robinson, 18
Harvey Miguel Robinson is currently biding his time on death row in a Pennsylvania prison for raping and kill three women. Robinson killed raped and killed his first victim, Joan Burghardt, in August of 1992 when he was just 17 years old. In June of 1993, at the age of 18, he raped and killed 15-year-old Charlotte Schmoyer. Just a month later in July, he raped and killed Jessica Jean Fortney. Robinson attempted to rape and kill a fourth victim, Denise Sam-Cali, but she escaped with her life. Robinson became the first serial killer throughout the history of Allentown, Pennsylvania for his preference of raping and repeatedly stabbing his female victims.

*** 17 years old ***

Ricky Caso, 17
In 1984, Ricky murdered his friend Gary Lauer's in the woods behind north port New York while high on LSD Ricky later told police that Satan appeared to him in the form of a crow to tell Ricky that he was pleased with the deed.

Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold , 17
The perpetrators of the Columbine massacre Eric and Dylan murdered 13 people and injured 25 more during the shooting at Columbine High School in 1999.

 Jaime Rouse, 17
In 1995 Jamie injured four people and killed two at Richland School in Tennessee he was tried as an adult and sentence to life in prison without parole.

Harvey Robinson, 17
Harvey Robinson is one of the youngest serial killers currently sitting on death row. Robinson raped and killed three adult women in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in the early 1990s, when he was 17 years old. His fourth victim was raped and beaten but managed to escape before Robinson could finish the job. Robinson was 19 when he was caught by local police.

Bryan, 16 and David Freeman, 17
Bryan and David were found to have beat their parents and younger brother to death apparently they had also shaved and tattooed their heads as a sign of their Nazi affiliation.

Willie James Bosket, Jr., 15
Considered by many to be New York’s most dangerous inmate, Willie James Bosket had committed more than 2,000 crimes and his first murders by the time he was just 15 years old. Bosket's first murder conviction was for the shooting death of two men during separate robbery attempts in 1978. He was sentenced to only five years of prison time for the murders, the maximum allowed at the time for someone his age. The public outcry over his light punishment led New York to become the first state to change its juvenile sentencing laws to allow kids as young as 13 to be tried and sentenced as adults. They decided to call it the Willie Bosket Law.

Edmund Kemper, 15
No list of serial murderers would be complete without a necrophile. Edmund Kemper, who grew up to be one of America’s most infamous serial killers, committed his first murders when he was just 15 years old. By August 1964, the California teenager was already showing all the classic traits of a sociopath — an exceptionally high IQ, an interest in torturing animals, and a deeply troubling relationship with his mother. When he was just 15 years old, Kemper shot and killed both his grandparents while staying on their ranch in North Fork, California. When authorities asked him about the killings, he said he "just wanted to see what it felt like to kill Grandma."
Kemper went on to murder six young women in Santa Cruz, his mother, and one of her friends, dismembering and sexually molesting their bodies after they were dead.

Barry Dale Loukaitis, 14
“This sure beats algebra, doesn’t it?”
On February 2, 1996, the Frontier Middle School was devastated by a hostage-taking incident and shooting spree that occurred in an algebra class. It took the lives of three people (two students and a teacher) and resulted in the critical injury of one student. The person accused was a 14-year-old boy named Barry Dale Loukaitis, who was experiencing delusional and messianic thoughts before the shooting. Barry was dressed to look like a gunslinger from the Wild West in a black duster, and armed with a .30-30 caliber rifle, a .357 caliber pistol and a .25 caliber pistol that belonged to his father. The students were held hostage for 10 minutes before a gym coach tricked and outwitted the boy.  It was believed that, aside from a history of mental illness and dysfunctional issues in his family, Barry was influenced by Pearl Jam’s song and video “Jeremy.” The video shows a troubled youth committing suicide in front of his classmates and teacher. It was also reported that he said “This sure beats algebra, doesn’t it?” when he saw his classmates panic. This is a quote from a Stephen King novel, Rage, in which the protagonist kills two teachers and takes his algebra class hostage. Barry is currently serving two life sentences, with an additional 205 years in prison.

Barry Lucas, 14
In 1996 Barry came to school with a gun and killed his algebra teacher along with two students before being subdued by another teacher.

Seisaku Nakamura, 14
A young serial killer by the name of Seisaku Nakamura, also referred to as Hamamatsu Deaf Killer, was only 14 years old when he took the life of his first victims. Authorities believe Nakamura stabbed eleven people to death in Shizuoka, Japan. The young man, who was born deaf, made attempts to rape two women who resisted whom, and so he killed them. He also murdered his brother and injured several of his family members. Although he committed his first murder in 1938, Nakamura was not arrested until 1942 and was executed in 1943.

Joshua Phillips, 14
Florida authorities searched for 8-year-old Maggie Clifton for more than a week before Missy Phillips noticed water strangely pooled at the foot of her teenage son's bed. Then, she noticed the smell. When Ms. Phillips pulled apart the base to check, she discovered Clifton's remains. Her son, 14-year-old Joshua Phillips, was later convicted of bashing the little girl’s head in and stabbing her in the neck. At trial, Phillips said he accidentally hit Clifton in the head with a baseball, then stabbed her to stop her from screaming. The autopsy showed that Clifton was still alive when Phillips stuffed her into his mattress.

Joshua Phillips, 14 (2)
“There should be a sensitivity to the fact that a 14-year-old is not a little adult.” – Florida Governor Jeb Bush
What started as a regular room cleaning ended with the conviction of a 14-year-old boy named Joshua Phillips. His mother went to clean up his room one morning after Phillips left for school. Mrs. Phillips noticed a wet spot under her son’s bed and thought it was a leak from his waterbed. As she was investigating the bed to see if it needed to be drained, she found electrical tape holding the frame together. She thought her son had known the about leak but didn’t want to get into trouble. She removed enough tape to discover her son’s sock underneath, but she was surprised to feel something cold. The beam of her flashlight showed her the dead body of Maddie Clifton, an 8-year-old neighbor who had been missing for seven days.  People in the community, especially the boy’s parents, could hardly believe he could have killed Clifton. Phillips was one of the neighbors who had volunteered to search for the missing girl. Because he was under 16, Phillips did not qualify for the death penalty. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, with no possibility of being freed. To this day, Phillips has not stated his motives for killing Clifton. He said he accidentally hit her in the eye with a baseball bat, and then dragged her to his room where he hit and stabbed her, but the jury did not believe his story.

Jesse Pomeroy, 14
November 29, 1859–September 29, 1932
“I might have done it.”
Jesse Pomeroy, born on November 29, 1859, in Charlestown, Massachusetts, was referred to as the youngest person convicted of murder, in the first degree, in the history of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Pomeroy started his cruel acts against other children when he was 11. He had taken and trapped seven children in a hidden spot where he would strip, tie and torture them, by using a knife or by poking pins into their flesh. He was caught and sent to a reform school, where he was supposed to stay until he was 21, but was released after a year and a half for good behavior. After three years, he had changed from bad to worse. He kidnapped and killed a 10 year old girl, named Katie Curran, and was also accused of the murder of a four year old boy, whose mutilated body was found in Dorchester Bay. Although there is a lack of evidence that can conclusively link Pomeroy to the little boy’s death, he was convicted for the death of Katie when the police found her body in the basement of Pomeroy’s mother’s dress shop, where it was carelessly left in an ash heap. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, which he served in solitary confinement; he died of natural causes at the age of 72.

This young murderer's story is on the older side, but definitely creepy enough to be remembered. Any search of the most homicidal children in history will lead you to the story of Jesse Pomeroy. By the time he was 11 years old, Pomeroy had already begun sexually molesting and torturing other boys. Pomeroy, who grew up in South Boston, would trap and attack his victims, even using knives and pins to torture them.  When Pomeroy was 14, he murdered and mutilated a 10-year-old girl who’d wandered near his mother’s store. He then killed a 4-year-old boy with a slash to the throat so severe, the child was nearly decapitated.  Pomeroy penned an autobiography while he was in prison, including his side of the story about the crimes. His defense? "I didn't do it, but if I did I’m probably insane."

Craig Price, 14
“As far as the girls go, it was my utmost intention to let them live.”
Joan Heaton (39), along with her two daughters, Jennifer (10) and Melissa (8), were found lifeless, blood-soaked and brutally murdered in their home on September 4, 1989. They were stabbed so fiercely that the knife broke off in Melissa’s neck. Police reported that Joan had approximately 60 stab wounds, while the young girls had approximately 30. The authorities believed that burglary was the suspect’s main motive; the knife used was from the Heaton’s kitchen and the women had possibly caught the suspect and fought against him. It was also believed that the burglar must have been someone from the Heaton’s neighborhood, who would have obtained a cut or wound in the hand, due to the force and number of times the victims were stabbed.  Craig was spotted by the police with a bandage on his hand, but said that he had smashed a car’s window. The police did not believe his story. They investigated him and charged him after finding the knife, gloves and other bloody items when they searched Craig’s room. He admitted to the crime and to another murder that had taken place in the neighborhood two years earlier. The authorities already suspected him as the murderer in that case, which was similar to Heaton’s and had started as burglary. Craig was tried and convicted before his 16th birthday, and is still in jail.

Eric Smith, 13
“You may think I’m a threat to the well-being of society. And I can understand why you would feel that way. The fact is that I’m not. I’d be an asset to society.”   At 13, Eric Smith was bullied because of his thick glasses, freckles, long red hair and one other quality: He had protruding, elongated ears. These were believed to be a side effect of medicine his mother had taken for her epilepsy when she was pregnant. Police charged Smith with the murder of a four-year-old boy named Derrick Robie. The younger child had been strangled, had large rocks dropped on his head, and had been sodomized with a small stick. When asked why he did it, Smith cannot give a definite answer. A psychiatrist diagnosed Smith with intermittent explosive disorder, a condition in which a person cannot control inner rage. Smith was convicted and went to prison. As of today, he’s been in prison for six years and has been denied parole five times

George Stinney, 14, October 21, 1929–June 16, 1944
Note: In December 2014, Stinney was exonerated on the basis that his confession was coerced and that he was wrongfully convicted without a fair trial.   On June 16, 1944, the United States set a record when they executed George Stinney (14 years old), the youngest person to be legally executed in the US during the twentieth century. George was convicted of the murder of two girls named Betty June Binnicker (11) and Mary Emma Thames (8) who were both found in a muddy hole. The girls suffered severe fractures to their skulls, inflicted by a railroad spike found some distance from the town. George confessed to the crime and said that he wanted to have sex with Betty but ended up killing the girls. He was tried and sentenced to death in the electric chair; the case was not appealed because his family had no money to pay for a continuation.

Lionel Tate, 14
“I was imitating the professional wrestlers”
What might be thought of as a regular TV wrestling match led to the death of a six-year-old girl named Tiffany Eunick. Kathleen Grossett-Tate was trusted to babysit Tiffany and brought her over to her house one evening. She left Tiffany with her son Lionel, age 14, to watch the television when she went upstairs. Around 10 p.m., she yelled at the children to be quiet, but didn’t check what the noise was about, thinking that they were just playing. 45 minutes later, Lionel called to his mother and told her that the girl was not breathing. He explained that they had been wrestling and he had her in a headlock as he slammed her on the table.  Authorities were called and a medical examiner reported that the cause of death was due to forceful stomping that lacerated Tiffany’s liver. Aside from that, experts testified that the girl suffered a fractured skull and rib, swelling in the brain from a beating that lasted from one to five minutes, and 35 other injuries. Tate changed his statement later and said that he jumped on her from the staircase. Tate was sentenced to a lifetime of imprisonment without parole in 2001, but his sentence was overturned on the basis that he was not given a mental competency hearing before, or during, the trial. He was released in 2004 with 10 years’ probation.

Graham Young, 14, September 7, 1947 – August 22, 1990
“It grew on me like a drug habit, except it was not me who was taking the drugs.”
At an early age, Graham Young had been fascinated with chemistry, particularly types of poison and their effects on people. His other great interest was idolizing murderers such as Dr. Hawley Crippen, William Palmer, Adolf Hitler and others. Young started experimenting with poisons when he was 14. He usually lied about his age, and explained that a given poison was for a school experiment so he could buy the chemicals he needed. His family and friends were his victims. His father, upon becoming ill, originally thought he just had a virus of some sort. Then the apparent illness struck his wife and daughter. All suffered from continuous vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pains. In 1962, the mother of Young’s stepmother died from poisoning. At 14, Young already had the expertise of a postgraduate chemistry student, all self-learned through library books. He sometimes became a victim of his own poisoning when he forgot on which foods he had placed his toxic chemicals. Young was caught when his teacher inspected his desk one evening after school, suspicious about the odd experiments Young was suggesting to the class. The teacher found poisons, essays about famous prisoners, and sketches of dying men. These revelations led him to call the police. Young was sent to a maximum security hospital, but this did not stop him from poisoning hospital staff and fellow inmates (one of whom died). His knowledge was so broad that he could extract cyanide from laurel bush leaves. Young was released when he was 23 and went to live with his sister. His poisoning spree continued—his victims most often were coworkers. Young was sent back to prison and eventually died there.

Mary Bell, 11
(b. May 26, 1957)
“Murder isn’t that bad; we all die sometime anyway.”
Brian Howe was found dead and covered with purple weeds and grass, days after the death of Martin Brown who died of asphyxiation. His hair was cut away, puncture marks were found on his thighs, and his genitals were partially skinned. Apart from these marks and injuries, a letter “M” had been imprinted on his stomach. This was originally an “N,” but Mary added a line to make it look like an “M.” The three-year-old boy had been strangled to death. When the investigation narrowed down to Mary Bell, she implicated herself by describing in detail a pair of broken scissors—which was confidential evidence—that had been played with by an 8-year-old boy whom Brian was allegedly with, according to Bell.  Mary’s family background may be responsible for her unusual behavior. She thought for a long time that her father was Billy Bell, a habitual criminal who had been arrested for armed robbery, but her biological father is unknown to this day. Mary claimed that her mother, Betty, who was a prostitute, had forced her to engage in sexual acts with men—particularly her mother’s clients—at the age of four. Mary ended up at an all-boys facility after her trial; she was too young to be held in prison and too dangerous to be kept in an unequipped mental hospital or an institution that housed troubled children. Her mother repeatedly sold Mary’s story to the press at the time of her daughter’s conviction. Mary was only 11 at that time. She was released after 23 years and fought and won the case for both her own anonymity and that of her daughter. This order is consequently known as a Mary Bell Order.

Jon Venables and Robert ThompsonBoth 10 years old  (Born: August 13, 1982, August 23, 1982)
James Bulger’s mother left her two-year-old son at the butcher shop’s door thinking that it would not take her long to return, since there was no queue in the store.  Little did she know that it would be her last time she would see her son alive.   Jon and Robert, who were at the same mall as the Bulgers, were participating in their usual activities: skipping class, browsing the stores, pocketing things when the salespeople turned their backs, and climbing chairs in the restaurants until they were chased out. The boys came up with an idea to have a little boy get lost outside so that he would get knocked over by a vehicle. It was reported that the boys had a similar previous attempt on a boy before James, which failed because the mother had become aware of her missing child and found him before they could take him outside.  During their two-mile walk, the 10-year-old boys had punched, kicked, picked up and dropped James on his head. Some of the acts were seen by passersby who ignored them, thinking that they were just two older brothers who didn’t know how to take care of their younger brother. Jon and Robert brought James onto the local railway, where they flung paint in his left eye, threw stones at him, beat him with bricks, and hit him with an iron bar. They also sexually assaulted him and laid his body on the railroad track, covering his bleeding head with bricks when they thought he was dead. It was reported that James died sometime before the train hit him.

Despite the gruesome nature of their crimes, Venables and Thompson were released in 2001 when they turned 18. Both men were given new identities and lifelong protection from having those identities revealed.

Amarjeet (Amardeep) Sada, 8
Amarjeet Sada might be India’s youngest serial killer. In 2007, 8-year-old Sada stunned news outlets worldwide when it was discovered that he'd murdered three children, including his sister. Sada reportedly told local investigators that he took each of the babies to a nearby field, hit them with a stone, and killed them. None of Sada’s victims had yet reached their first birthday.
