The holidays can present potentially dangerous situations for children. Some simple prevention measures can help keep your children safe during the season.
The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips from the Los Angeles Police Department Crime Prevention Section can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season.
* If possible, leave small children at home with a trusted babysitter.
* Teach your child to go to a store clerk and ask for help in case your child is separated from you.
* Teach children to stay close to you at all times while shopping.
* Never allow children to make unaccompanied trips to the restroom.
* Children should never be allowed to go to the car alone and they should never be left alone in the car.
* Teach children their full name, address and telephone number to give to police officers or mall security. Teach children to immediately inform you if a stranger is bothering them.

Pay-in-Advance Credit Offers
The Bait:
News that you've been "pre-qualified" to get a low-interest loan or credit card, or repair your bad credit even though banks have turned you down. But to take advantage of the offer, you have to ante up a processing fee of several hundred dollars.
The Catch:
A legitimate pre-qualified offer means you've been selected to apply. You still have to complete an application and you can still be turned down. If you paid a fee in advance for the promise of a loan or credit card, you've been hustled. You might get a list of lenders, but there's no loan, and the person you've paid has taken your money and run.
Your Safety Net:
Don't pay for a promise. Legitimate lenders never "guarantee" a card or loan before you apply. They may require that you pay application, appraisal, or credit report fees, but these fees seldom are required before the lender is identified and the application is completed. In addition, the fees generally are paid to the lender, not to the broker or person who arranged the "guaranteed" loan. Forward unsolicited email containing credit offers to spam@uce.gov.
PAKISTANI WOMEN SUFFER MANY INDIGNITIES
5 August 2009:
Women of Indian subcontinent suffer disrespect and indignity, Ms Asma Jhangir, secretary-general of the Human Rights Association of Pakistan said here yesterday.
Delivering a lecture on the "Role and position of women of Pakistan," she said the women there have suffered by not being active in politics. But, expressing hope, she said they have major contribution in stopping the complete Islamisation of Pakistan, and with the world changing, they would not lay behind, she added. The lecture was organized by India-Pakistan friendship society.
Ms Jahangir said women the world over faced the difficulty of having to prove the offence of rape. But in Pakistan, if the police thought the woman had agreed to the sexual act, she became a co-accused, and so very few rape cases are reported.
Giving an instance, she said a blind girl, Safiya Bibi, was raped by her employer and his son. She conceived. After the child was born, the doctor at the hospital urged her father to file a case. But little did he realize that she would be sent to prison for three years and subjected to 75 lashes as punishment while the accused went free.
The most tragic case is of a 13-year-old orphan, Jhamina. Her uncle and his son raped her. A distant relation filed a case. The court held her guilty and gave her 100 lashes in public. The case went in the apeal to the federal shariat court. The judges said: " For the sake of mercy, "the sentence was reduced to 20 lashes and three years imprisonment. After completing her sentence, she went back to her village. But said Ms Jahangir, she has not spoken a word since then to anybody, she pretends to be deaf.
There have been instances of policemen raping women and then arresting them for running a brothel. In another case, a policeman raped a 60-year-old woman. He was not convicted. But the woman had to fight two years to defend her honor.
The law is open to exploitation. But as it exists in the name of religion, it cannot be changed, she said.

Sex, lies and young people
Until the recent introduction of the human relationships course in Queensland high schools, education about sexuality was limited to a description of the reproductive organs, isolated from decision making, self-esteem and personal rights, as well as from factual information about sexuality, reproduction and contraception, In no way were adolescents prepared for dealing with sexual development and the issues and choices they face.
A further stumbling block for adolescents is society's denial of their sexuality. Indeed, adolescents may deny their own sexuality, as evidenced by the widespread non-use of contraception. Yet they are sexually active.
Reliable data on adolescent sexuality is scarce. A survey of Newcastle adolescents in 1989 found that at 15 years of age 27% had experienced sexual intercourse, at 17 years, 41% and at 18 years, 62%. Youth have a real need for contraceptive access and information.
Australian surveys show that 85% of teenagers think that information on sex and contraception should be available before age 16, but that barely half received any sex education at school and only about half could discuss sex with their parents.
The Human Relationships Education Program is being introduced into Queensland schools over a five-year period. It addresses five areas: communication; relationships; self-esteem; values; sexuality. The program content varies between schools, and no school is compelled to cover issues such as contraception or pregnancy options.
The Family Planning Association was set up in 1972 to provide information and access to contraception. Teenagers currently form a sizable part of its clientele, but are most likely to be from middle-class, metropolitan homes. Many teenagers are unaware of the service and of its relevance to themselves, so the widespread non-use of contraception persists.
The majority of teenage pregnancies result from the non-use of contraception. A 1979 survey found that 63% of males and 47% of females aged 18 to 25 years had, at some stage, ``taken the risk''. The information presented to Children by Choice in Queensland suggests that the situation is the same today.
Contraception requires planning, and an acknowledgment of the intention to have sex. However, forward planning is often disapproved of. Teenage girls may be unwilling to accept themselves as sexually active, thinking ``good girls don't have sex''. Women of all ages seem to feel comfortable with the excuse that sex was not expected. Furthermore, an intention to use contraception, especially condoms, may not be followed through at the time of intercourse.
Sometimes, young women's non-use of contraception is due to a belief that it is not possible to fall pregnant because they do not love their partner, or because they are too young, or because they have not been having sex long enough.
Another class of reasons for the non-use of contraception is the dislike of the various methods. Young people sometimes say that various forms of contraception are unsafe or that ``condoms take the feeling away''.
Contraceptive services are still not aimed at young people's needs. Confidentiality is a big issue, as are the questions of parental consent and the age of eligibility. Access to confidential information and assistance is particularly limited for young people in rural areas and small towns.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that in 1990 there were 3266 births in Queensland to women aged under 20. This represents 7.2% of total births in Queensland. Australia-wide, there were 15,107 teenage births in the same year, 5.75% of the total.
A comparison of adolescent and adult women visiting Children by Choice shows that teenagers do not fit the same pattern as adults in a number of ways:
1. Teenage women are more likely to be dealing with their first pregnancy.
2. Teenagers usually present further into their pregnancy.
3. Teenagers are less likely to attend the service on their own. They are likely to be accompanied by a parent or a partner.
4. Teenagers are more likely to be single, and less likely to have ever been married.
5. Teenagers are more likely to be students (usually high school) or unemployed.
On presentation to the counseling service, many young women are still coping with their initial reactions to discovering the pregnancy: usually shock, denial and fear.
Sensitive, non-judgmental counseling can help deal with these first reactions and provide an opportunity for the woman to discuss her feelings about the pregnancy and her circumstances, making possible careful consideration of all the options.
It is especially difficult for young women to consider realistically the impact of their choice on all aspects of their future. Some young women, unable to make a decision about an unplanned pregnancy, will become mothers by default rather than by choice.
For adolescent women, counseling may include dealing with their parents. The initial reaction of teenage girls' parents often includes anger, but this usually subsides and most parents are extremely cooperative and concerned for their daughters. However, there are cases where counseling may involve conciliation of the young woman and her parents, at times including protection from their initial anger.
Currently the percentage of young women choosing adoption as a solution to an unplanned pregnancy is very small. Only 68 newborns were relinquished for adoption in Queensland in the 1991-92 financial year, and eight of these were special needs adoptions. This is an extremely small number considering the Birthrate in Queensland is around 44,000 per year. The vast majority of young women facing an unplanned pregnancy choose parenting or abortion.
Abortions in Queensland are performed legally under section 282 of the Criminal Code. Medicare covers most of the cost. When considering abortion in unplanned pregnancy counseling, the woman will be given an opportunity to discuss her feelings about abortion and any moral, ethical or practical concerns she has.
She will be offered support for her decision and will be able to obtain information about abortion clinics, the procedure and instructions for pre- and post-operative care.
Accurate statistics on abortions in Australia are hard to obtain because there is no central reporting of abortions except in South Australia. National estimates, however, are usually around 80,000 per annum.
As society becomes gradually more accepting of single parenthood, marriage as a solution to unplanned pregnancy is becoming less frequent. Nevertheless, in 1990, Australia-wide, 21.5% of all married women giving birth for the first time within a marriage had been in the current marriage for less than one year, and 10.7% had been married for less than 7 months prior to giving birth. For teenage women the figures are significantly higher: 71% had been in the current marriage for less than one year and 48.7% had been in the marriage for less than 7 months at the time of giving birth.
Single teenage parents have many special needs. They suffer the consequences of an interruption to education, with subsequent loss of career options, and financial difficulty. Also, early parenthood means an interruption to the normal processes of adolescence as a transition to adulthood. The existing Socio-economic disadvantage of women is also accentuated by teenage pregnancy.
Sex education and the prescription of contraception are clearly insufficient prevention for unplanned teenage pregnancy and will not solve the myriad of problems facing youth. This requires much wider social change. The reproductive rights of women, including adolescent women, must be recognized. There must be:
* An open attitude towards youth sexuality, which means sexuality as a part of life, and not just married life.
* Support for young women to develop their skills fully, not only as potential wives and mothers.
* Encouragement of self-esteem in young women, including the right to say ``no''.
* Information about the positive and negative consequences of sex incorporated into a total picture of sexuality and not dealt with separately.
* Freely available, safe and effective contraceptives.
* Active promotion of condoms, including education on how to use them.
* A positive attitude towards unmarried, pregnant teenagers, including practical support to enable them to continue with their education.
* An acceptance that the choice in teenage pregnancy ultimately belongs to the young woman herself.
* The continued availability of safe, legal and affordable abortion services, with sympathetic treatment of women.

Safety Tips for Selecting a Babysitter: A Guide for Parents and Grandparents
Look for mature and responsible people who listen and respond well to your children and appear relaxed and happy with them. Be specific about your expectations. Ask for a number of references (e.g., past employers, teachers, counselors, relatives, friends, neighbors.)
If you have not already done so, ensure that you have his or her name, address, and telephone number. If the sitter is not an adult, you should also meet his or her parents.
Once you have made a tentative selection, check all references carefully. Assure references that their comments will not be revealed to anyone, including the sitter. Ask them if they believe that the sitter possesses the demeanor, responsibility and qualifications to care for children. Ask if they would hire this person to care for their children. If anything said by a reference makes you feel uncomfortable, it may be best to select another person to care for your children.
When the Babysitter Arrives
Ask your babysitter to arrive at least fifteen minutes before your departure time. If the sitter has not been in your home before, conduct a brief tour of the house. Point out the location of telephones, first-aid equipment, doors and other possible exits.
Ensure that the sitter fully understands specific responsibilities and your general expectations. This includes knowing:
* That the children are not to be left alone at any time.
* Family rules, including disciplinary guidelines.
* Daily routines, including eating, television, and sleeping arrangements.
* About any food allergies that your children may have.
* Emergency telephone numbers: relatives, friends or neighbors and emergency services.
* How to contact you. Write down where you will be (address and telephone number) and your cellular telephone and/or pager numbers.
* That all outside doors should be kept locked and to never open the door for anyone (unless you have given prior permission.)
* That information should not be given to callers. Sitters should tell a caller that you are unavailable and should take a message.
* That children should be watched closely while awake, especially if taken outside, and should be checked regularly after they have gone to sleep.
* Who the children may play with or visit.
* Rules associated with use of your belongings (e.g., telephones, computers, and appliances.)
* That friends should not be invited into your home.
Parents are also responsible for ensuring that children understand that the babysitter is in charge and that they are expected to follow all family rules.
When You Return Home
When you return home, you should always have a discussion with the babysitter. Ask about:
* Children's behavior and activity.
* Telephone calls.
* Anything out of the ordinary.
After the babysitter has left, talk to your children about what happened while you were gone. Ask them:
* If anything made them feel afraid or uncomfortable.
* If they would like him or her to baby-sit again.

"Richard Ramirez - The Night Stalker"
Richard Ramirez - The Night Stalker, Serial Killer/Rapist/Mutilator
He was Considered "The Baby of the Family": Ricardo Leyva a.k.a. Richard Ramirez was born in El Paso, Texas, on February 28, 1960, to Julian and Mercedes Ramirez. Richard was the youngest child of six, epileptic, and described by his father as being "a good boy," until his involvement with drugs. Richard admired his father, but at the age of 12, he found a new hero, his cousin, Mike, a Vietnam veteran and ex-Green Beret.
Ramirez Finds Himself a Hero: Mike, home from Vietnam, shared gruesome pictures of rape and human torture with Richard, who became fascinated with the pictorial brutality. The two spent a lot of time together, smoking pot and talking about war. On one such day, Mike's wife began to complain about Mike's laziness. Mike's reaction was to kill her by shooting her in the face, in front of Richard. Because of Mike's war record, he was sentenced to seven years for the killing.
Drugs, Candy and Satanism: By the age of 18, Richard was a habitual drug user and chronic candy eater, resulting in tooth decay and extreme halitosis. He also became involved in Satan worshiping and his general poor appearance enhanced his satanic persona. Already arrested on numerous drug and theft charges, Ramirez decided to move to southern California. There he advanced from simple theft to breaking and entering into homes. He became very proficient at it and eventually began to linger in the homes of his victims.
Pure Evil: On June 28, 1984, his burglaries turned into something far more evil. Ramirez entered through an opened window of Glassel Park resident, Jennie Vincow, age 79. According to Philip Carlo's book, 'The Night Stalker,' he became angry after not finding anything of value to steal, and began stabbing the sleeping Vincow, eventually slitting her throat. The act of killing aroused him sexually, and he had sex with the corpse before leaving.
Savored Memories Fade: Ramirez remained quiet for eight months, but the memory he savored of his last killing had run dry. He needed more. On March 17, 1985, Ramirez jumped 22-year-old Angela Barrio outside her condo. He shot her, kicked her out of the way, and headed into her condo. Inside, was roommate, Dayle Okazaki, age 34, who Ramirez immediately shot and killed. Barrio remained alive out of pure luck. The bullet had ricocheted off the keys she held in her hands, as she lifted them to protect herself.
His Thirst for More Blood: Within an hour of killing Okazaki, Ramirez struck again in Monterey Park. He jumped 30-year-old Tsai-Lian Yu and pulled her out of her car onto the road. He shot several bullets into her and fled. A policeman found her still breathing, but she died before the ambulance arrived. Ramirez's thirst was not quenched. He then murdered an eight-year-old girl from Eagle Rock, just three days after killing Tsai-Lian Yu.
Post-Morten Mutilations Become His Trade-Mark: On March 27, Ramirez shot Vincent Zazarra, age 64, and his wife Maxine, age 44. Mrs. Zazzara's body was mutilated with several stab wounds, a T-carving on her left breast, and her eyes were gouged out. The autopsy determined that the mutilations were Post-Morten. Ramirez left footprints in the flower beds, which the police photographed and cast. Bullets found at the scene were matched to those found at previous attacks, and the police realized a serial killer was on the loose.
Ramirez's Personal MO - Kill the Man Quickly: Two months after killing the Zazzara couple, Ramirez attacked again. Harold Wu, age 66, was shot in the head, and his wife, Jean Wu, age 63, was punched, bound, and then violently raped. For unknown reasons, Ramirez decided to let her live. Ramirez's attacks were now in full throttle. He left behind more clues to his identity, and was named, 'The Night Stalker,' by the media. Those who survived his attacks, provided the police with a description - Hispanic, long dark hair, and foul smelling.
The Pentagrams Found at the Crime Scene: On May 29, 1985, Ramirez attacked Malvial Keller, 83, and her invalid sister, Blanche Wolfe, 80, beating each with a hammer. Ramirez attempted to rape Keller, but failed. Using lipstick, he drew a pentagram on Keller's thigh and on the wall in the bedroom. Blanche survived the attack. The next day, Ruth Wilson, 41, was bound, raped, and sodomized by Ramirez, while her 12-year old son was locked in a closet. Ramirez slashed Wilson once, and then bound her and her son together, and left.
His Killing Spree Terrorized Los Angeles:
Ramirez's 1985 killing and rape spree continued:
* June 27 - Ramirez raped a 6-year-old girl in Acadia.
* June 28 - Patty Higgins, age 32, was beaten and her throat slit.
* July 2 - Mary Cannon, age 75, was beaten and her throat slit.
* July 5 - Deidre Palmer, age 16, survived being beaten with a tire iron.
* July 7 - Joyce Lucille Nelson, 61, was bludgeoned to death.
* July 7 - Linda Fortuna, 63, was attacked and Ramirez tried to rape her, but failed.
* July 20 - Maxson Kneiling, 66, and his wife Lela, also 66, were shot and their corpses, mutilated.
* July 20 - Chitat Assawahem, 31, was shot and his wife Sakima, 29, was beaten then forced to perform oral sex. Ramirez then collected $30,000 in valuables, but before leaving, he sodomized the couple's eight-year-old son.
* August 6 - Ramirez shot both Christopher Petersen, 38, and his wife, Virginia, 27, in the head. Both somehow survived.
* August 8 - Ramirez shot Ahmed Zia, 35, and raped and sodomized his wife, Suu Kyi, 28, and forced her to perform oral sex on him.
On Aug. 24, 1985, Ramirez traveled 50 miles south of Los Angeles, and broke into the home of Bill Carns, 29, and his fiancée, Inez Erickson, 27. Ramirez shot Carns in the head and raped Erickson. He demanded she swear her love for Satan and afterwards, forced her to perform oral sex on him. He then tied her and left. Erickson struggled to the window and saw the car Ramirez was driving.
A teenager wrote down the license plate number of the same car, after noticing it cruising suspiciously in the neighborhood.
The information from Erickson and the young man enabled police to locate the abandoned car, and get fingerprints from inside. A computer match was made of the prints, and identification of the Night Stalker became known. On August 30, 1985, the arrest warrant for Richard Ramirez was issued and his picture released to the public.
The End of the Night Stalker - Richard Ramirez.
A Face Revealed:
On August 30, 1985, an arrest warrant for Richard Ramirez was issued and his face revealed to the public. Ramirez, unaware that his picture was all over the newspapers, got off of a Greyhound bus, and walked into a liquor store. The woman working inside recognized him and began yelling that he was the Night Stalker. Shocked, he quickly fled the store and headed toward the heavily populated Hispanic area of east Los Angeles. A small mob had formed and was following close behind him.
Captured by a Mob: Ramirez tried to steal a car, but the owner was underneath it doing repairs. When Ramirez started the engine, the man pulled out from beneath the car and began chasing Ramirez. The mob that was in pursuit of Ramirez, now armed with steal rods, caught up with him. He was subdued, while some of the mob beat him, until the police arrived. Reportedly, Ramirez raised his hands to the police, begging for protection, and identified himself as the Night Stalker.
Endless Appeals: Because of the endless appeals on the part of the defense, the Ramirez trial did not end for over four years. One such appeal was to overturn the decision by a judge, for refusing to remove Judge Tynan from the case. In addition, defense attorney, Daniel Hernandez, suffered from stress, which resulted in numerous medical delays.
Haunts of the Charlie Manson Trial: During the trial, Ramirez attracted several groupies who wrote to him regularly. The trial scene had haunts of the Charlie Manson trial, with women hanging around, clad in black robes. When one of the juror's failed to show up one day, and was discovered dead in her apartment from a gun shot wound, many wondered if some of Ramirez's followers were responsible. But in actuality, it was the woman's boyfriend who killed her, during an argument that erupted while discussing the Ramirez case.
The Virgin Doreen: In 1996, Ramirez tied the knot with one of his groupies. She is 41-year-old Doreen Lioy, who has described herself as a virgin, prior to her marriage to Ramirez. Since death-row inmates are not permitted to have conjugal visits, then she may still be a virgin, not that anyone would care, other then Ramirez, who said her virginity is what attracted him to her.
Mixed Marriage: Doreen Lioy believes her husband is innocent of the charges against him. Lioy, who was raised as a Catholic, respects Ramirez's Satanic worship. This was demonstrated when she gave him a silver wedding band to wear, since Satanic worshipers do not wear gold.
He was Sentenced to Die: On September, 20, 1989, The Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez, was found guilty on 43 counts in Los Angeles County, including 13 murders, and charges including burglary, sodomy, and rape. He was sentenced to death on each count of murder. After receiving his sentence, Ramirez responded, "Big deal," he said. "Death always went with the territory." and told reporters, "I'll see you in Disneyland." Currently Ramirez is in San Quentin Prison, where he sits on death row, until he is out of appeals.
During the sentencing stage, it was reported that Ramirez did not want his attorney's to beg for his life. It will be interesting to see if he will demonstrate this same bravado on the day he dies.
He has already outlived some of the victims that survived his attack.
Email Scams - Foreign Lotteries
The Bait:
Emails boasting enticing odds in foreign lotteries. You may even get a message claiming you've already won! You just have to pay to get your prize or collect your winnings.
The Catch:
Most promotions for foreign lotteries are phony. The scammers will ask you to pay "taxes," "customs duties," or fees – and then keep any money you send." Scammers sometime ask you to send funds via wire transfer. Don't send cash or use a money-wiring service because you'll have no recourse if something goes wrong. In addition, lottery hustlers use victims' bank account numbers to make unauthorized withdrawals or their credit card numbers to run up additional charges. And one last important note: participating in a foreign lottery violates U.S. law.
Your Safety Net:
Skip these offers. Don't send money now on the promise of a pay-off later.

Ed Gein
Summary:
When police went to Ed Gein's Plainfield, Wisconsin farm home to investigate the disappearance of a local woman, they had no idea they were about to discover some of the most grotesque crimes ever committed.
Personal Information:
* Born - August 27, 1906
* Birthplace - La Crosse, WI
* Gender - Male
* Religion - Unknown
* Ethnicity - White
* Died - July 26, 1984
* Location of Death - Mendota Medical Health Institute
* Cause of Death - Cancer
The Gein Family: Ed Gein, his older brother Henry, his father George and mother Augusta, lived together on their 160-acre farm a few miles outside Plainfield, Wisconsin. George was an alcoholic and Augusta was a demanding, over-bearing woman who had full control over her boys. From as far back as Ed could remember, Augusta was either delegating farm work for the boys to perform, or quoting the Gospel. She tried hard to teach Ed and Henry about sin, especially about the evils of sex and women.
Living Alone: In 1940 George died as a result of his alcoholism. Four years later Henry died while fighting a fire. Ed was now fully responsible for the welfare of his domineering mother. For two years he tended to her demands until her death in 1945. Ed, now alone, sealed off all but one room and the kitchen of the large farmhouse. He no longer worked the farm after the government began paying him as part of a soil conservation program. Doing local handyman jobs subsidize his income.
Fantasy of Sex and Dismemberment: Gein stayed to himself. No one knew that he spent hours obsessed with sexual fantasy and reading about the female anatomy. The human experiments performed in Nazi camps also fascinated him. His mind filled with images of sex and dismemberment and as the mental images merged into one, Ed would reach gratification. Gus, another loner, was a longtime friend Gein. Gein told Gus of experiments he wanted to perform but he needed bodies. Together the two began robbing graves for the needed bodies.
Transformations: This same scenario went on for more than 10 years. This included removing Gein's mother from her grave. The experiments with the corpses became more gruesome and bizarre over time and included necrophilia and cannibalism. Gein's obsessive fantasies centralize on his over-powering desire to turn himself into a woman. He would construct items out of the skin of the body that he could then drape on himself such as a female mask and breasts. He even made a complete body-sized female-like jumpsuit.
Mary Hogan: Gein's needs escalated into believing to perfect his desired sex change he would need fresher bodies. On December 8, 1954, Gein, now age 48, killed Mary Hogan, owner of a local tavern. The police were unable to solve the strange disappearance of Mary Hogan, but with the blood found at the tavern, they knew she was most likely a victim of foul play. Gus was not involved in the murder. He was institutionalized before the killing began. Only Gein knew for sure how many he women he killed.
Bernice Worden: On November 16, 1957, Gein entered the hardware store owned by Bernice Worden. Gein had been to this same store hundreds of times and Bernice had no reason to fear him. She likely thought nothing when Gein removed a .22 rifle from the display rack although her instincts probably sharpened if she saw him insert his own bullet into the rifle. Gein shot the rifle and killed Bernice, placed her body into the store's truck, returned to get the cash register, then drove the store truck to his home.
The Worden Investigation Begins: An investigation to the whereabouts of Bernice Worden began after her son Frank, a deputy sheriff, returned late in the afternoon from an early morning hunting trip and discovered his mother was missing and blood was on the floor of the store. A review of the store receipts included the purchase of a half of gallon of antifreeze.
Gein Becomes A Suspect: Worden thought about any suspicious activity that he could recall, and one thing came to mind. He remembered that Gein had been in and out of the store the previous week and also at closing time the night before. He remembered Gein saying he'd be back in the morning for antifreeze and that Gein questioned Worden about going hunting the next day. Although Gein had never been involved in any known criminal activity, the sheriff felt it was time to pay the odd loner a visit.
Unfathomable Crimes Uncovered: Gein was located by police at a store near his home. Police then went to Gein's farmhouse in hopes of finding Bernice Worden. The shed was the first area searched. Working in the dark of the night, Officer Schley lit a torch and slowly swung it around the shed. Inside was a woman's naked corpse hanging upside down, the body disemboweled, and the throat and head missing. It was the body of Bernice Worden.
Next came the search of Gein's house. The police officers waded through piles of garbage and an unfathomable amount of junk with only oil lamps to guide them. As the officers eyes adjusted, the junk began to take a recognizable form, one that was more horrific than anyone could have ever imagined. Everywhere they looked they saw various body parts, some used as household items such as skulls made into bowls, jewelry made from human skin, lips hanging, chair seats with human skin upholstery, facial skin that was well preserved and resembled masks, a box of vulva's among which was his mothers, painted silver.
It was later determined that the body parts came from 15 different women although some parts could never be identified. One of the most shocking items found was that of fellow officer Worden's mother's heart - found in a pan on the stove. The lives of the police officers who walked through the house of horrors on that night changed forever.
Gein was committed to the Waupun State Hospital for the duration of his life. It was revealed that his reasons for killing older women stemmed from his love-hate feelings for his mother. He never admitted to his cannibalistic or necrophilia activities. At the age of 78, Gein died of cancer and his remains were buried in his family plot in Plainfield.
The property eluded evil and horrific memories for the people of Plainfield and eventually it was torched by citizens.

Dennis Rader - The BTK Strangler
On Friday, February 25, 2005 suspected BTK Strangler, Dennis Lynn Rader, was arrested in Park City, Kansas and later charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder. The day following his arrest Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams announced in a press conference, "the bottom line is that BTK has been arrested."
Rader's Early Years: Rader was one of four sons to parents William and Dorothea Rader. The family lived in Wichita where Rader attended Wichita Heights High School. After a brief attendance in 1964 to Wichita State University, Rader joined the U.S. Air Force. He spent the next four years as a mechanic for the Air Force and was stationed abroad in South Korea, Turkey, Greece and Okinawa.
Rader Leaves the Air Force: After the Air Force he returned home and began working on obtaining his college degree. He first attended Butler County Community College in El Dorado then transferred to Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina. In the fall of 1973 he returned to Wichita State University where in 1979 he graduated with a major in Administration of Justice.
A Work History with A Common Thread - Access:
* While at Wichita State he worked part time in the meat department at an IGA in Park City.
* From 1970 to 1973 he was an assembler at the Coleman Company, assembling camping gear and equipment.
* From November 1974 to July 1988 he worked for a home security company, ADT Security Services, where he had access to homes as an installation manager. It has also been noted that the business increased as community fear of the BTK killer increased.
* From 1990 until his arrest in 2005, Rader was a supervisor of the Compliance Department at Park City, a two-maned, multi-functional department in charge of "animal control, housing problems, zoning, general permit enforcement and a variety of nuisance cases." His performance in his position was described as "overzealous and extremely strict" by neighbors.
* He also served as a census field operations supervisor in 1989.
Active in Church and a Club Scout Leader: Radar married Paula Dietz in May, 1971 and had two children after the murders began. They had a son in 1975 and a daughter in 1978. For 30 years he was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church and was an elected president of the Congregation Council. He was also a Cub Scout leader and was remembered for teaching how to make secure knots.
The Trail That Led Police To Rader's Door: Enclosed in a padded envelope sent to the KSAS-TV station in Wichita was a purple 1.44-megabyte Memorex computer disk that the FBI was able to trace to Rader. Also during this time a tissue sample of Rader's daughter was seized and submitted for DNA testing. The sample was a familial match to the semen collected at one of the BTK crime scene.
The Arrest of Dennis Rader: On February 25, 2005 Rader was stopped by authorities while in route to his home. At that point several law enforcement agencies converged on Rader's home and began searching for evidence to link Rader to the BTK murders. They also searched the church he belonged to and his office at City Hall. Computers were removed at both his office and his home along with a pair of black pantyhose and a cylindrical container.
Rader is Charged With 10 BTK Murders: On March 1, 2005 Dennis Rader was officially charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder and his bond set at $10 million. Rader appeared before Judge Gregory Waller via video conference from his jail cell and listened to the 10 counts of murder read against him, while family members of his victims and some of his neighbors watched from the courtroom.
Family Response: It is believed that Paula Rader, who has been described as a gentle and soft spoken woman, was shocked and devastated by the events that transpired with the arrest of her husband as were her two children. As of this writing, Mrs. Rader has not been to visit Dennis Rader in prison and she and her daughter are reportedly out of state in seclusion.
On June 27, 2005, Dennis Rader plead guilty to 10 counts of first-degree murder then calmly told the court the chilling details of the "Bind, Torture, Kill" slayings that terrorized the Wichita, Kansas area between 1974 and 1991.
